The Giro d’Italia which is Italian for “Tour of Italy” is a longevous cycle racing competition that started around 1909. This season’s competition will see greats like Richard Carapaz, Tom Dumoulin, Vincenzo Nibali, and Tao Geoghegan Hart locking horns in this war of cycling. Unfortunately, the competition will see no involvement from last year’s victor ludorum Egan Bernal, who is still recovering from a sustained injury.

This professional cycle racing competition involves completing various Giro d’Italia stages in different terrains. I will be dissecting the various stages from 1 - to 21 in the thread below.

Stage 1

Date: 06/05/2022

Location: Budapest - Visegrad

Distance: 195 kilometers

Altitude Gain: 900 meters

The Giro d’Italia 2022 stages kick off from the Hungarian capital Budapest, the route is flat as Hungary is known for its lowland, but in the ending part, there is a rise in the last 5 km. The urban parts of the city are very visible in the route as the terrain is made up of straight, wide, and well-constructed roads around the city.

Stage 2

Date: 07/05/2022

Location: Budapest - Budapest

Distance: 9.2 kilometers

Altitude Gain: 150 meters

Day 2 of the Giro d’Italia sees the race take a different turn, as it starts from the Heroes’ Square, and heads down towards several bends, through the river paths. There are two u-turns on the route, and in the closing 1500 meters, the route takes a completely different toll, hitting a 14% maximum gradient.

Stage 3

Location: Kaposvar - Balatonfured

Distance: 201 kilometers

Altitude Gain: 890 meters

This route runs through the lake parts of Hungary, which leads through the Balaton, and to the shores. The closing parts of the race will see participants race through the Tihany Peninsula, with little climbing. The closing 500 meters of the race ushers in a slight rise which will lead to the finish line on the tarmac.

Stage 4

Date: 10/05/2022

Location: Avola - Etna

Distance: 170 kilometers

Altitude Gain: 3500 meters

Moving forward, stage 4 starts with a passage through Inland Sicily, moving through Noto, Vizzini, and Pantalica. There are fewer climbs, and the closing 3km are through the main road, which leads to a slope with less than 500 meters to the road to finish the race, and exactly at approximately 250 meters before the finish of the race.

Stage 5

Date: 11/05/2022

Location: Catania - Messina

Distance: 174 kilometers

Altitude Gain: 1200 meters

Stage 5 sees the participants move from Catania through Taormina, the road routes are flat altitude-wise, very wide, but surrounded by sharp curves, along the pathway. Leaving the coast, there is a long climb through Portella Mandrazzi and a long drop to the north parts of the coast. 

Stage 6

Location: Palmi - Scalea

Distance: 192 kilometers

Altitude Gain: 900 meters

This stage is more of smooth sailing, as the road paths are very wide through the ss. 18 trunk road, as tunnels can be seen through the run. Riding through Mileto to Razza airport will pose a threat as that path may seem a bit difficult. In the final lap of the race, that passes through Scalea, the road is wide, well-paved, straight, and roundabout.

Stage 7

Date: 13/05/2022

Location: Diamante - Potenza

Distance: 196 kilometers

Altitude Gain: 4510 meters

This stage comes with loads of hiccups through the South Apennines. Racers can begin taking advantage of the beginning parts of the run, as it is the only part of the race that has a flat terrain. Throughout the race from the Passo della Colla, Laurie, Monte Sirino, Viggiano, Sellata, and finally Potenza, the racers will encounter narrow roads, which even become more strenuous around the mountain areas. 

Stage 8

Date: 14/05/2022

Location: Napoli - Napoli

Distance: 153 kilometers

Altitude Gain: 2130 meters

This stage is another tough one as it will be done mostly on urban roads. They begin by climbing the Posillipo through to Bacoli, where they will cover 19 kilometers 4 times. The narrow nature of the roads has lots of bends with changes in gradients.

Stage 9

Date: 15/05/2022

Location: Isernia - Blockhaus

Distance: 191 kilometers

Altitude Gain: 5000 meters

This stage sees the race starting through the Valico del Macerone, and journeys through the tough Rionero Sannitico, which continues to Roccaraso. There is a 90 kilometers descent that leads to the Passo Lanciano, which leads to Lettomanoppello and expands towards urban areas. 

Stage 10

Date: 17/05/2022

Location: Pescara - Jesi

Distance: 196 kilometers

Altitude Gain: 1760 meters

This stage has two parts, beginning from Statale Adriatica where racers will experience hiccups around the urban areas. The second part of the race will usher very narrow and sharp terrains. The race continues through to Civitanova Alta, Recanati, Filottrano, Santa Maria, and Monsano.

Stage 11

Date: 18/05/2022

Location: Santarcangelo Di Romagna - Reggio Emilia Parmigiano

Distance: 203 kilometers

Altitude Gain: 480 meters

This stage crosses the lowlands terrain of Emilia to Romagna, through wide and straight roads. This stage sees racers pass through urban areas, traffic islands, and roundabouts. The final kilometers of this stage is still on wide roads, as speed seems to be the major hiccup of the stage. The finish line is 350 meters on a wide tarmac of about 7 meters.

Stage 12

Date: 18/05/2022

Location: Parma - Genova

Distance: 204 kilometers

Altitude Gain: 2600 meters

This stage is another challenging one through the Apennines, racers will gently experience very easy gradients from Parma, through the Taro river, advancing Liguria from Passo del Bocco. A technical descent can be seen through Carasco till Val Fontanabuona. The final parts of this route will see participants crossing the San Giorgio bridge, through some tunnels from the Genova exit.

Stage 13

Date: 20/05/2022

Location: Sanremo - Cuneo

Distance: 150 kilometers

Altitude Gain: 1450 meters

This stage sees racers facing a tough single climb from the Colle di Nava, through the Cuneo. Racers will be faced with loads of tunnels. The last parts of the race will be on a straight, well-paved, and wide road, where the racers will ride for 800 meters before the last kilometers.

Stage 14

Date: 21/05/2022

Location: Santana - Torino

Distance: 147 kilometers

Altitude Gain: 3000 meters

This stage will tell on racers, as it is a very short but worrisome stage. From the start at Santana, racers will experience flat terrain as they race towards Rivodora to Superga in a 36.4 kilometers stretch. Upon succeeding through Colle de Maddalena there are a few hiccups as the racers race through the urban areas.

Stage 15

Date: 22/05/2022

Location: Rivarolo Canavarro - Cogne

Distance: 178 kilometers

Altitude Gain: 3980 meters

This stage runs through Canavese and the Baltea through Acosta. The route continues through Pila, Verrogne, and Cogne, and every 10 kilometers, racers will climb through well-structured roads. The last 4 kilometers from Cogne through to the finish line, have 2.5% gradients.

Stage 16

Date: 24/05/2022

Location: Salo - Aprica

Distance: 202 kilometers

Altitude Gain: 5250 meters

This stage covers up to 5000 meters in altitude gain. This stage begins from Valsabbia in a long climb of nearly 30 kilometers to the 2,000 meters of the Goletto di Cadino. Racers will experience a rise in gradients and a few narrow roads leading towards Grosio.

Stage 17

Date: 25/05/2022

Location: Ponte Di Legno - Lavarone

Distance: 168 kilometers

Altitude Gain: 3730 meters

This stage is solely a mountain stage which is shared into two parts. The stage starts uphill towards Passo del Tonale for over 70 kilometers to the Val Di Sole and Val Di Non. The stage continues through the Valle Sri Mocheni and Pergine Valsugana. The final 700 meters will usher an incline to the finish line.

Date: 26/05/2022

Location: Borgo Valsugana - Treviso

Distance: 152 kilometers

Altitude Gain: 1150 meters

This stage has to do with runs through Valsugana and the Venetian Plain, with more racing through the Scale Di Primolano and the Muro. Racers may likely face a wide and straight road as they navigate through urban regions, traffic islands, street furniture, and roundabouts.

Stage 19

Date: 27/05/2022

Location: Marano Lagunare - Santuario Di C.

Distance: 177 kilometers

Altitude Gain: 3230 meters

Here is another stage that is generally marred by mountains. Beginning at Marano crossing through lowlands, hills, runs are made through Buja, passing Passo Di Tanamera into Slovenia en route Uccea, and so forth. 

Stage 20

Date: 28/05/2022

Location: Belluno - Marmolada

Distance: 168 kilometers

Altitude Gain: 4490 meters

As it seems the race is coming to an end, this stage starts at Belluno, passing through Agorda, Cencenighe, and Val Cordevole. Racers will go through 3 climbs with over 10% gradients covering the terrain.

Stage 21

Date: 29/05/2022

Location: Verona

Distance: 17,4 kilometers

Altitude Gain: 280 meters

Finally, the closing stage of the Giro d’Italia 2022 Professional cycle racing sports event will see a trial time on the Torricelli Circuit by an individual. Runs will be made through a wide and straight terrain, with a 4.5 kilometers slope running through a narrow path. The course continues for over 4 kilometers on a straight and wide pathway, with the 3 kilometers racing through sharp bends, streets, and the city in general.
