ICC Men’s T20 World Cup: Standings, Stats, Match Results

How it Began!

On October 17, the T20 World Cup began in a riveting fashion as the hosts Oman opened the tournament with a bang. The First Round saw multiple upsets, a David Wiese 44-ball 66 runs blitz, Scotland’s Chris Greaves, who in a few months, went from doing Amazon deliveries to pulling off a miracle against a strong Bangladesh side. The First Round showed that the Associates are more than capable of playing this game and if they are given more experience and resources, they can cause a lot of disruption for the top-tiered squads.

Favorites exit early

The next stage featuring the big teams saw a disappointing performance from West Indies whose hopes shattered way early. Title favourite India couldn’t even make it to the Semis, the Associate teams Scotland and Namibia stood little chance. Sri Lanka won just two in Super 12s but showed a lot of promise. South Africa saw their campaign finish based on net run rate before Semis despite four wins. Afghanistan showcased glimpses but got overwhelmed by bigger squads. Bangladesh had the most forgettable tournament, losing all the games in Super 12s. Meanwhile, New Zealand, England, Australia, and Pakistan made it to the Semis.

Australia wins it all!

In the Semis, we saw Jimmy Neesham and Daryll Mitchell heroics bailing New Zealand out against England. Australia’s Matthew Wade 41 runs off 17 balls sealed the deal versus surging Pakistan to set up a New Zealand-Australia final, a battle between two neighboring nations. In the Finals, Kane Williamson scored a blistering 85 off 48 but Mitchell Marsh’s 77 runs trumped his efforts. Thus, Australia became the ICC T20 World Cup champions of this edition after not many pundits picked them as title favorites!
